The Younger Dryas, which occurred circa 12,900 to 11,700 years Before Present (BP), was a stadial (cooling) event which marked a return to glacial conditions, temporarily reversing the climatic warming of the preceding Bølling–Allerød Interstadial (also known as the Late Glacial Interstadial, which spanned from 14,670 to 12,900 BP.).

This near-glacial period is called the Younger Dryas, named after a flower (Dryas octopetala) that grows in cold conditions and that became common in Europe during this time. The end of the Younger Dryas, about 11,500 years ago, was par-ticularly abrupt.
The Younger Dryas (YD) is known as the best example of an abrupt climatic event recorded on land, in the oceans, and in ice cores (Alley et al., 2002, 2003). It was a cold event that occurred between 11,000 and 10,000 14 C years ago, (approximately 12,800 and 11,600 calendar years ago), and it lasted about 1,200 years.
