Louis Leakey clasificó inicialmente la especie como Zinjanthropus boisei; "boisei" por el antropólogo Charles Boise; "zinj", una antigua palabra para designar a África Oriental, y "anthropus", hombre. Otro cráneo fue encontrado en 1969 por Richard Leakey en Koobi Fora cerca del lago Turkana.
Paranthropus boisei is a species of australopithecine from the Early Pleistocene of East Africa about 2.5 to 1.15 million years ago. [1] The holotype specimen, OH 5, was discovered by palaeoanthropologist Mary Leakey in 1959 at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania and described by her husband Louis a month later.

12 de jul. de 2019 · The Leakeys called their new discovery Zinjanthropus boise i (Zinj is an old name for East Africa; boisei acknowledges Charles Boise, a supporter of the Leakeys during those long, difficult years). They referred to it as “Zinj” or “Dear Boy.”. The press nicknamed it “Nutcracker Man” because of its huge jaws and teeth.
