Maurice-Étienne Gérard est né à Damvillers (Meuse), le 4 avril 1773, fils de Jean, huissier royal et audiencier à la prévôté de Damvillers et de Marie-Jeanne Saint-Rémy, qui appartenaient à la petite bourgeoisie rurale de Lorraine. Sa vocation militaire commence avec la Révolution.

The son of a royal bailiff, Étienne Maurice Gérard would rise to become a notable general and eventually a Marshal of France. Gérard first joined the military in October of 1791 when he volunteered to join the 2nd Battalion of Meuse.

Labbé.
