By the time of the depression of the 1880s Oamaru was home to an impressive array of buildings and the "best built and most mortgaged town in Australasia". A major factor in the near bankruptcy of Oamaru was construction of the "Borough water race", [clarification needed] an aqueduct completed after 3 years work in 1880.
