25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy is a privately printed, limited edition artist's book by the American artist Andy Warhol in 1954. It consists of 19 lithographs that were hand-colored with watercolor by the artist and his friends.
In 1954, Andy and Julia released a limited-edition artist’s book ungrammatically titled 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy (public library), featuring Andy’s signature blotted-line watercolor drawings in vibrant pop-art colors and calligraphy by Julia.
Untrue to its grammatically flawed title, 25 Cats features prints of only 16 different cats. Except for the cat named Blue Pussy, each one is named Sam, after the first cat Warhol bought to keep Hester company.
One of his lesser known works, Andy Warhol's 25 Cats Named Sam and One Blue Pussy is a soul-warming depiction of the twenty-six cats that co-habited with Andy Warhol and his mother, Julia Warhola in their New York apartment. Beautifully illustrated by Warhol, it is accompanied by his mother's distinctive script.
In 1954, Warhol published a book of hand-colored lithographs titled 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy, void of text except for calligraphic captions by his mother (who accidentally left off the ‘d’ in the title—a flaw which Warhol embraced).
