John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford, KG, PC, FSA (6 July 1766 – 20 October 1839), known as Lord John Russell until 1802, was a British Whig politician who notably served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in the Ministry of All the Talents. Duke of Bedford (named after Bedford, England) is a title that has been created six times (for five distinct people) in the Peerage of England. The first creation came in 1414 for Henry IV's third son, John, who later served as regent of France. In 1433 he surrendered the title and it was re-granted to him.

This article considers the newly identified decoration and furnishing accounts of John, 6th Duke of Bedford (1766-1839). The 6th Duke inherited unexpectedly from his elder brother on 2 March 1802, aged just thirty-five (he had become a widower the previous year). In 1803 he married his second wife, Lady Georgiana Gordon (1781-1853).

John Russell, the 6th Duke of Bedford, visited Canova's studio in Rome in December that year and, impressed by the artistry of The Three Graces, told Canova he wanted to acquire the finished marble.
