July 1951 Published on July 1, 1951. A pleasant autobiography, concluding with the abdication crisis of 1936, the obvious culmination of the narrative. The work is not particularly informative about broad world or Empire affairs, but is most useful for an understanding of the subtle premises of that unique institution, the British crown.

We now know that his dying words were “Damn you!”, and that the editor of the Times had successfully petitioned to have him ‘switched off’ a few hours early, as it would look bad for the announcement to appear in the evening papers.
