Pugin var sønn av en fransk arkitekt og tegner som lærte sønnen å tegne gotiske kirker og arkitekturdetaljer. Augustus Welby Pugin fikk sin grunnskoleutdanning som dagelev ved Christ´s Hospital, bedre kjent som Blue-Coat School. Han ble snart elev under sin far og var med ham blant annet til Normandie for der å studere forisk arkitektur.
