Aiko Miyawaki (1929-2014) was born in Tokyo, Japan. Although she was trained in the formal cultural traditions of Japan, practicing the koto (traditional stringed instrument of Japan) and the art of Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) she found her way out of those conventions, developing her unique contemporary practice in the context of postwar Japan.

Miyawaki Aiko est sculpteur, tendance abstraite. Dans les années 1980 et 1990, elle expose en installant ses œuvres en plein air, d'abord à Ichinomiya, puis en France, aux États-Unis, et en 1991-1992 à la fondation Joan-Miró de Barcelone . Elle est d'abord peintre avant de s'adonner à la sculpture.
Aiko Miyawaki va néixer el 20 de setembre de 1929 a Tòquio com a filla única de la família Atami, comerciants adinerats. Va estar malalta durant tota la seva infantesa, motiu pel qual li van canviar el nom per altres de més forts: quan estava a l'escola bressol va rebre el nom de Takako i posteriorment el de Mikiko.
