Lineage and early life Princess Alexandra. Alexandra's father was Alexander Duff, 1st Duke of Fife.Having succeeded his father as the 6th Earl Fife, he was elevated to Duke of Fife and Marquess of Macduff in the Peerage of the United Kingdom on his marriage in 1889 to Princess Louise of Wales, the eldest daughter of the future Edward VII.

She and her sisters Victoria and Maud had spent much of their childhood away from court, in the summers at their father’s estate at Sandringham in Norfolk, or sometimes with their mother’s relatives in Denmark.

The couple's first child Alastair Duff, Marquess of Macduff, was stillborn on 16 June 1890. A daughter followed, Princess Alexandra, 2nd Duchess of Fife (Alexandra Victoria Alberta Edwina Louise) born on 17 May 1891, the first grandchild for the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Motto. Deo juvante ( Latin for 'With God's help') Earl Fife was a title in the Peerage of Ireland created by letters patent dated 26 April 1759 for William Duff, 1st Baron Braco, after asserting (but not proving) his descent from Macduff, the medieval Earl of Fife. Though in the Irish peerage, the title's name refers to Fife in Scotland.
Alexander William George “1st Duke of Fife” Duff. Born at Delgaty Castle in Aberdeenshire, the son of Sir James, 5th Earl of Fife and his wife Lady Agnese Haye. He married Princess Louisa Victoria Alexandria of Wales on 27 June 1889. After the wedding, Queen Victoria, Louise's grandmother, created him Duke of Fife and Marquess of MacDuff.
