Alben William Barkley ( / ˈbɑːrkli /; November 24, 1877 – April 30, 1956) was an American lawyer and politician from Kentucky who served as the 35th vice president of the United States from 1949 to 1953 under President Harry S. Truman. In 1905, he was elected to local offices and in 1912 as a U.S. representative.

Barkley spent almost fifteen years there before being elected to the Senate in 1926. While in the House, he was a loyal supporter of President Woodrow Wilson's agenda and established a strong liberal voting record.
