Family and Connections. Albert was the third of six children of General Charles Grey and Caroline Eliza Farquhar. His father, Charles, was the son of the 2nd Earl Grey, who was prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1830 to 1834 and, reputedly, the recipient of a diplomatic gift from China of black tea scented with bergamot oil, which became known as Earl Grey tea.

Albert Grey (1851–1917), great-nephew of Prime Minister Earl Grey, was a radical Liberal peer in favour of women's suffrage. Formerly an MP, he became the 4th Earl Grey in 1894. During the 1890s he was a director of the British South Africa Company and administrator of Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), and then Governor-General of Canada 1904–1911.
