Eric was the youngest son of the Duke Albert II, Duke of Brunswick-Grubenhagen and his wife, Countess Elizabeth of Waldeck. While his elder brother Philip inherited the principality of Grubenhagen from his father, Eric was destined according to the customs of the era for a career in the clergy.
Henry was the son of Henry III of Brunswick-Grubenhagen and Margaret, a daughter of the Duke Jan I of Żagań and Scholastica of Saxe-Wittenberg. After his father's death in 1464, he succeeded him as Prince of Grubenhagen. Since he was a minor, he was under the guardianship of his uncle, Albert II until he came of age in 1479.
Albert II, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg ( German: Albrecht II., Herzog zu Braunschweig-Lüneburg; 1 November 1419 – 15 August 1485), was a Prince of Grubenhagen; he reigned from 1440 until his death in 1485.
