On 15 July 1635, Maximilian married his niece Maria Anna of Austria (1610–1665), daughter of Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor and Maria Anna of Bavaria (1574–1616), in Vienna. They had two sons: Ferdinand Maria (1636–1679) ∞ 1652 princess Henriette Adelaide of Savoy (1636–1676)
Ferdinand Maria (born Oct. 31, 1636, Munich—died May 26, 1679, Schleissheim, Bavaria) was the elector of Bavaria (1651–79), son of Maximilian I. A minor when he succeeded, he did much to repair the wounds caused by the Thirty Years’ War, encouraging agriculture and industries, and building or restoring numerous churches and monasteries.
