La Constitución de Weimar, de agosto de 1919 creó la oficina de presidente de Alemania (en alemán: Reichspräsident). Tras la muerte de Paul von Hindenburg, en agosto de 1934, la oficina quedó vacante, y Adolf Hitler se convirtió en jefe de Estado como el Führer und Reichskanzler.
El actual presidente de Alemania es Frank-Walter Steinmeier, miembro del Partido Socialdemócrata de Alemania.

Since German reunification in 1990, the President has been the head of state for all of Germany. The East German constitution of October 1949 created the office of President of the German Democratic Republic ( German: Präsident der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik ).
With the promulgation of the Grundgesetz in 1949, the office of President of the Federal Republic (in German: Bundespräsident) was created in West Germany. Partly due to the misuse of presidential powers in the Weimar Republic, the office's powers were significantly reduced.
