  1. By Anne Leader . Painter Alessandro Allori was born on 31 May 1535 in Florence. Adopted by Agnolo Bronzino at age five, Allori developed into one of the leading second-generation Mannerists, working in Florence for the Medici court and other important patrons on a variety of projects including portraits, narrative frescoes, temporary decorations, and altarpieces.

  2. Alessandro Allori's fresco-work covering every available surface of the Montauti Chapel in Florence's Basilica della Santissima Annunziata, executed between 1560 and 1564. The painter was in his late twenties at this time, and clearly in thrall to monumental models seen in Rome by both Michelangelo [as above] and Raphael [as below].

  3. This painting derives from an original by Bronzino (Agnolo di Cosimo) dating to 1560, of which numerous copies and variations were made, some directly in the master’s workshop. Among these figures the Borghese panel, which is one of the best. Critics believe it to be the work of Alessandro Allori, who was Bronzino’s first collaborator.
