Admiral; second-in-command to Lord Howe at 'The Glorious First of June', 1794, one of the earliest naval victories in the war against France. He was Commander-in-Chief of the Channel Fleet, blockading Brest almost continuously, 1797-1800.

  6. Created 1st Viscount Bridport in 1800, the sitter was the younger brother of Samuel, 1st Viscount Hood, and commanded the frigate Minerva, 32 guns, at Quiberon Bay in 1759. In 1778 he commanded the 'Robust', 74 guns, in Palliser's division of the fleet at Ushant and took his side in the subsequent courts martial known as 'the Keppel affair'.
