Born Alexander Robert Maule Ramsay in London, England, the son of Sir John William Ramsay, 13th Earl of Dalhousie and Lady Ida Louise Bennet. He joined the Royal Navy as a cadet on HMS Britannia in 1894. In 1911 he became a naval aide-de-camp to the Duke of Connaught.
His brother, Sir William Ramsay of Inverleith succeeded Sir Alexander at Dalhousie in 1342 and was famous for his raid around Norham Castle at the battle of Nesbitt Moor in 1355.
