Gallup was to become famous as a result of the Presidential Election of 1936 when he conducted a poll of 50,000 people which predicted the election results more accurately than the famed Literary Digest poll (using over two million people) which had accurately predicted the previous five presidential elections.
Then the Eagleton situation happened and he was done. That's not doomed from the start though, that's blowing a winnable election. Nixon looked very beatable in '72, he was just playing on easy mode with his opposition. Al Smith was running against Herbert Hoover, who in 1928 was probably the most beloved man in the whole country.
