Their firm is noted in many documents as Messrs. Walker & Burgess, engineers of Limehouse, with his last name being almost always spelt in this way. He died at Worthing on 12 March 1886, and is buried at West Norwood Cemetery. Alfred Burges was a British civil engineer.

His father was a partner in Walker and Burgess, his uncle, the contractor John Leschallas, died a rich man in 1877. From 1839 Burges attended the King’s College School in London, where his drawing teacher was probably the painter John Sell Cotman.
