His use of General Alfred von Schlieffen's (1833-1913) plan for a rapid victory on two fronts failed and he was relieved of command after the defeat at the Marne.

The primary purpose of the plan was to ultimately envelope the French army near Paris. After his death the plan was altered as the German High Command made adjustments which weakend the right wing.
