A civil ensign is an ensign (maritime flag) used by civilian vessels to denote their nationality. It can be the same or different from the state ensign and the naval ensign (or war ensign). It is also known as the merchant ensign or merchant flag.

Ensign (/ ˈ ɛ n s ən /; Late Middle English, from Old French enseigne (transl. mark, symbol, signal; flag, standard, pennant), from Latin insignia (plural)) is a junior rank of a commissioned officer in the armed forces of some countries, normally in the infantry or navy.
When a merchant ship of any nation formally recognized by the United States salutes a ship of the U.S. Navy, she lowers her national colors to half-mast. The Navy ship returns the salute by lowering her ensign to half-mast for a few seconds, then closing it back up. The merchant vessel then raises her ensign back up.
