The wars were fought between supporters of the House of Lancaster and House of York, two rival cadet branches of the royal House of Plantagenet.

From an early age, he had a great devotion to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and to Our Lady. He recited the rosary often and would go into the local church before and after class to pray before the tabernacle.
