The current dukedom of Richmond was created in 1675 for Charles Lennox, the illegitimate son of King Charles II of England and one of his mistresses, the Breton noblewoman Louise de Penancoët de Kérouaille; Charles Lennox was also made Duke of Lennox a month later.

Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond, 2nd Duke of Lennox, 2nd Duke of Aubigny, of Goodwood House near Chichester in Sussex, was a British nobleman and politician. He was the son of Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond, 1st Duke of Lennox, the youngest of the seven illegitimate sons of King Charles II.
Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond (1701-1750), became the fourth noble Grand Master of Grand Lodge in 1724. Master of London’s most influential Masonic lodge, the Horn Tavern in New Palace Yard, Westminster (pictured below), and a grandson of Charles II, Richmond set a pro-Hanoverian seal on eighteenth-century Freemasonry.
