Vyshhorod ( Ukrainian: Вишгород, IPA: [ˈwɪʒɦorod]; Russian: Вышгород, romanized: Vyshgorod) is a city in Kyiv Oblast, central Ukraine, situated immediately north of the capital Kyiv, and part of the Kyiv metropolitan area.
During the time of Kyivan Rus’, Vyshhorod was a strategic fortress that defended the northern approach to Kyiv. It repelled Cuman attacks in 1093, 1136, and 1146. In 1240 it was destroyed by the Mongols. In the 15th and 16th centuries Vyshhorod was merely a village owned by the Mezhyhiria Transfiguration Monastery.
