Andrew Hill (June 30, 1931 [1] – April 20, 2007) was an American jazz pianist and composer. Jazz critic John Fordham described Hill as a "uniquely gifted composer, pianist and educator" although "his status remained largely inside knowledge in the jazz world for most of his career." [2]

(He was 32, born and raised in Chicago; he claimed Haitian heritage — inspired by drummer Andrew Cyrille, who was actually of Haitian descent — to make himself more interesting to journalists and promoters.) But Black Fire, the LP he recorded that day and released in 1964, was indeed a landmark album.
