Katherine Alice Applegate was born on July 19, 1956, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but she grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. As a child she had dogs, cats, and other pets. For a time while she was in high school, she worked for a veterinarian. Applegate later graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a liberal arts degree.
