His father, Antonio Orrico, was a New York-born dock worker, and his mother Anna (née Protettore) was an immigrant from Calabria. Italian was the primary language spoken at home, though Saxon also spoke some Spanish. He attended New Utrecht High School and studied acting with famous acting coach Stella Adler.

Saxon was born Carmine Orrico on Aug. 5, 1936, in New York to Antonio and Anna (Protettore) Orrico. He told The Knoxville News-Sentinel of Tennessee in 1997 that he based his stage name on a Brooklyn roller hockey team he admired, the Saxons. “They were extraordinary; they looked like a professional team,” he said.

Still active in his seventies, Saxon remained an audience favorite for tough guys, bad men and those who generally meant business. Born Carmine Orrico in Brooklyn, NY on Aug. 5, 1936, he was the first child of dockworker, Antonio Orrico, and his wife, Anna Protettore.
He was the son of Anna (Protettore), an Italian immigrant, and Antonio Orrico, who was born in New York, to Italian parents. John had roots in Calabria. His ashes are buried at Lake View Cemetery in Seattle near Bruce Lee and Brandon Lee.
