Anthon Gerard Alexander van Rappard (14 May 1858, Zeist – 21 March 1892, Santpoort) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman. He was a pupil of Lawrence Alma-Tadema. He was also a friend and mentor of Vincent van Gogh for about four years, who is said to have appreciated him for his social engagement, amongst other reasons.
At the urging of his brother Theo, in 1880 Vincent visited the young Dutch painter Anthon van Rappard, who was studying at the art academy in Brussels. The first meeting between this sprig of the nobility and Vincent the ‘drifter’ was rather awkward, but soon they became friends.
Most discussions of the Dutch artist, Anthon van Rappard focus on his complex friendship with Vincent van Gogh. Between 1881-1885, the two artists travelled together in Holland and often worked side by side.
The Dutch artist Anthon van Rappard (1858–92), best known as a friend and correspondent of Vincent van Gogh (1853–90) during the first half of the 1880s, on two occasions spent time sketching in the Utrecht institute, first in the fall of 1882, then again sometime in 1890–91.
