Richard Franklin was originally attached as director, and Antony I. Ginnane produced. The script was originally set in Queensland, Australia, but the producers wanted to import four overseas actors, and Actors Equity objected. De Roche re-wrote the film so it was set in New Zealand.
These films included the horror film productions of Antony I. Ginnane. While Australia would have success with international films between the mid-1980s and the 2000s, less than 5 horror films were produced in the country between 1993 and 2000.

From her mention of the ‘Ulupna Tribe,’ I suspect that these words were Yorta Yorta, (see Wikipedia) but I have no way of knowing for sure. (Decades ago I had a small red ‘Aboriginal Dictionary’.
