Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset, 1st Earl of Hertford, 1st Viscount Beauchamp KG, PC (1500 – 22 January 1552), also known as Edward Semel, was an English nobleman and politician who served as Lord Protector of England from 1547 to 1549 during the minority of his nephew King Edward VI.

Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset (c.1500–1552), was the eldest brother of Jane Seymour, the third wife of King Henry VIII, and was thus the uncle of King Edward VI. Henry had created him Viscount Beauchamp "of Hache " in 1536, at the time of the marriage, and Earl of Hertford in 1537.

The foundation of Somerset's career was that he was elder brother of Jane Seymour [1], Henry VIII's third wife, and therefore uncle to Edward VI. His father had been a gentleman of good family at Wolf Hall in Wiltshire.
