  6. Archibald was born 1847, the eldest son of Archibald, Lord Dalmeny, Member of Parliment, by Lady Catherine Lucy Wilhelmine Stanhope, daughter of the 4th Earl Stanhope. He was a Privy Counsellor, and was crowned Knight of the Order of the Garter in 1892, and the Order of the Thistle in 1895.
