    Early life and army career[] Lowe was born in Hayfield, Derbyshire as the only child of Arthur (1888–1971) and his wife Mary Annie (Nan) née Ford (1885–1981). As a child, he went to Chapel Street Junior School in Levenshulme, Manchester. Lowe’s original intention was to join the Merchant Navy, but this idea was thwarted because of his poor eyesight.
