Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo [also known as A.H. Mackmurdo] was born in Edmonton, Middlesex, England on 12 December 1851 and was articled to the architect Thomas Chatfield Clarke (1829-1895) in London. In 1873 he moved to the London office of James Brooks (1825-1901), a Gothic Revival architect, to whom Mackmurdo later acknowledged his debt "as an exemplar of methodical thoroughness".
Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo's title page for Wren's City Churches documents the influence of English design upon European Art Nouveau. Conceived in the same spirit as later European Art Nouveau designs, the title page exhibits complex relationships of positive and negative space, visual rhythms, and abstract forms based upon the natural growth of plants.

Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo was a progressive English architect and designer, who influenced the Arts and Crafts Movement, notably through the Century Guild of Artists, which he set up in partnership with Herbert Horne in 1882. He was the pioneer of the Modern Style and in turn global Art Nouveau movement.

21 de nov. de 2006 · An integral part of Mr. Mackmurdo's undertaking was the appearance at regular intervals of an official organ; and so, when in 1882, together with Mr. Herbert Home, his former pupil, taken subsequently into partnership, and his friend Mr. Selwyn Image, he instituted the Century Guild, the issue of the Hobby Horse came as a due and fitting sequence.
