Pedro I de Brasil y IV de Portugal (12 de octubre de 1798 - 24 de septiembre de 1834) fue un monarca portugués. Proclamó la independencia de Brasil y se convirtió en el primer emperador de Brasil y en el primer jefe de Estado de ese país. Dom Pedro I (12 October 1798 – 24 September 1834) was the founder and first ruler of the Empire of Brazil, where he was known as " the Liberator ". As King Dom Pedro IV, he reigned briefly over Portugal, where he also became known as "the Liberator" as well as " the Soldier King ".

The First Reign was the period of Brazilian history in which Pedro I ruled Brazil as Emperor. It began on September 7, 1822, when Brazil's independence was proclaimed, and ended on April 7, 1831, when Pedro I abdicated the Brazilian throne. [1]

Unable to deal with both Brazilian and Portuguese affairs, Pedro I abdicated his Brazilian throne on 7 April 1831 and immediately departed for Europe to restore his daughter to the Portuguese throne . Pedro I's successor in Brazil was his five-year-old son, Pedro II. As the latter was still a minor, a weak regency was created.
