17. mai er Norges grunnlovsdag og feires som nasjonaldag; begge betegnelser brukes om dagen. Dagen er blitt feiret siden 1820-årene, og fra 1823 ble datoen i avisene omtalt som «grunnlovsdagen». Den første offisielle feiringen var i 1827. Dagen ble feiret fullt ut etter kong Karl Johans død i 1844.
