Desde su fundación en 1325, la organización política de los mexicas en México-Tenochtitlan era parecida a una monarquía, es decir existía una familia encargada de gobernar y ceder el poder a su propia descendencia, generalmente a los varones.
Primeros años. Axayacatl fue hijo de la princesa Atotoztli II y su primo, el príncipe Tezozómoc hijo de Itzcóatl. nieto de Moctezuma Ilhuicamina e Itzcóatl . Fue sucesor de Moctezuma, sus hermanos fueron los huey tlatoani Tízoc y Ahuízotl. Tío del huey tlatoani Cuauhtémoc y padre de Moctezuma Xocoyotzin y Cuitláhuac .
