Lord Vere had a long career in Parliament and in the navy, rising to the rank of admiral in 1745 and Senior Naval Lord in 1746.

Aubrey Beauclerk (1740-1802) was the fourth child of Admiral Vere Beauclerk and his wife Mary Chambers. He was a great-grandson of King Charles II by his mistress, Nell Gwyn. Aubrey was the only son that lived long enough to succeed his father. He became the 2nd Baron Vere in 1781. In 1787, he also picked up the title of 5th Duke of St. Albans.
