    August Macke, am 3. Januar 1887 in Meschede im Sauerland geboren und in Bonn aufgewachsen, begann 1904 ein Studium an der Düsseldorfer Akademie und besuchte zugleich Kurse der dortigen Kunstgewerbeschule. 1907 trat er für einige Monate in das Studienatelier von Lovis Corinth in Berlin ein.

Em Paris, onde esteve pela primeira vez em 1907, Macke pôde conhecer a obra dos impressionistas e logo depois mudou-se para Berlim, onde passou alguns meses no estúdio de Lovis Corinth.
