Generalleutnant, short GenLt, ('lieutenant general') is the second highest general officer rank in the German Army ( Heer) and the German Air Force ( Luftwaffe ). Generalleutnant (NATO-Code OF-8, englisch lieutenant general) ist ein militärischer Dienstgrad für Soldaten der Bundeswehr und des Bundesheeres sowie weiterer moderner und früherer Streitkräfte. Prior to the reunification of Germany, general officer rank designations in the German Democratic Republic were based on the Soviet model. Generalmajor was still the lowest general officer grade, followed by Generalleutnant, Generaloberst (now three stars instead of four) and Armeegeneral.

Kurt Arthur Benno Student (12 May 1890 – 1 July 1978) was a German general in the Luftwaffe during World War II. An early pioneer of airborne forces, Student was in overall command of developing a paratrooper force to be known as the Fallschirmjäger, and as the most senior member of the Fallschirmjäger, commanded it throughout the war.
