The rank traces its origins to the Middle Ages, where the title of lieutenant general was held by the second-in-command on the battlefield, who was normally subordinate to a captain general.

Lieutenant General is a three-star General Officer rank, one pay grade above the highest permanent rank of Major General. Lieutenant General is a temporary position reserved for times of war, and expires with the end of the general's active tour of duty, usually 3 to 5 years.
A lieutenant general commands an army corps, made up of typically three army divisions, and consisting of around 60,000 soldiers. The term major general is a shortened version of the previous term sergeant major general, which was also subordinate to lieutenant general.
