Scaggs married his first wife, Donna Carmella Storniola, in 1973. They had two sons: Austin, a music journalist for Rolling Stone, and Oscar, who died on December 31, 1998, from a heroin overdose. Scaggs and Carmella divorced in 1980. After 3.5 years, Scaggs won joint custody of his sons. Carmella died in February 2017.
