Greg was born in Lansing, Michigan to parents both active in classical music. His father, Dennis Burk, was an internationally active conductor, and mother Giovanna Colonelli, a lyric soprano and linguist. Greg began playing piano at age 6. At 16, he began frequenting the rich jazz scene in Detroit and began leading his own groups.
