He was the fourth but third surviving son of Ernst Ludwig I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen and his first wife, Dorothea Marie of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. Karl Friedrich inherited the duchy of Saxe-Meiningen when his father died in 1724, along with his older brother, Ernst Ludwig II , under the guardianship of his uncles Frederick Wilhelm and Anton Ulrich until 1733.
Georg succeeded his father as Duke of Saxe-Meiningen on 20 September 1866, when Bernhard was forced to abdicate in favor of his son following the defeat of Austria in the Austro-Prussian War. In opposition to his father, Georg had sided with the Prussians during the war and was rewarded with a position of Lieutenant General of the Prussian army.
Bernhard II. heiratete am 23. März 1825 in Kassel Prinzessin Marie von Hessen-Kassel (1804–1888), Tochter des seit 1821 regierenden Kurfürsten Wilhelm II. von Hessen-Kassel (1777–1847) und dessen erster Frau, der preußischen Prinzessin Auguste (1780–1841). He is particularly known for developing the en:Meiningen Ensemble using his court theatre. He was married first to Charlotte of Prussia (1831–1855), with whom he had four children. His third wife was the actress Ellen Franz.
