William Cavendish became Viscount Mansfield in 1620, and in 1621, he was created Earl of Newcastle upon Tyne and Baron Cavendish of Bolsover.

  4. His interests in art and science were wide-ranging. He was a significant patron of the arts - supporting both authors and musicians - and wrote poetry and drama himself. He spent much of his time surrounded by philosophers, playwrights, poets and musicians, who came to be known as 'The Cavendish Circle'.
