William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne, KG, KB, PC (c. 16 December 1593 – 25 December 1676), who after 1665 styled himself as Prince William Cavendish, was an English courtier and supporter of the arts.

William Cavendish, 1st duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (born c. 1593—died December 25, 1676, Welbeck, Nottinghamshire, England) was a Royalist commander during the English Civil Wars and a noted patron of poets, dramatists, and other writers.
The first duke, William Cavendish, was the son of Charles Cavendish and his second wife Catherine Ogle, 8th Baroness Ogle, daughter of Cuthbert Ogle, 7th Baron Ogle. William Cavendish became Viscount Mansfield in 1620, and in 1621, he was created Earl of Newcastle upon Tyne and Baron Cavendish of Bolsover.

His interests in art and science were wide-ranging. He was a significant patron of the arts - supporting both authors and musicians - and wrote poetry and drama himself. He spent much of his time surrounded by philosophers, playwrights, poets and musicians, who came to be known as 'The Cavendish Circle'.
