Hace 5 días · The manor and 12th century castle at Bolsover were purchased by Sir Charles Cavendish, son of Bess of Hardwick in 1608. Sir Charles began re-building the mediæval castle, a process continued by his son William Cavendish, later 1st Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne. Despite its appearance, the castle was designed for elegant living rather than defence.

Hardwick Hall was built to suit the needs and reflect the status of Bess of Hardwick (1521-1608), who was born on the site, outlived a succession of husbands, and accumulated significant wealth in the process.
