It was the first time a serving PM and his wife had toured an overseas war zone where Australian forces were fighting. Their departure from Canberra on two chartered planes was delayed by 24 hours for unexplained operational reasons and accompanying journalists slept overnight at Fairbairn Airport.
Gorton resigned from the Liberal Party in May 1975 and, standing as an Independent Senate candidate, was defeated at the following election. On leaving Parliament Gorton remained active in public life as a radio commentator and patron for marijuana law reform. After Bettina died in 1983, he married Nancy Home.
Sir John Grey Gorton (9 September 1911 – 19 May 2002) was the 19th Prime Minister of Australia. He was elected Liberal Party leader after Harold Holt was drowned. He was a fighter pilot during the Second World War and had a battle scarred face. He said he was "Australian to the bootheels". Bettina Brown married Gorton in 1935.
