William Morris Hughes CH QC (25 September 1862 – 28 October 1952) was an Australian politician who served as the seventh prime minister of Australia from 1915 to 1923. He led the country during World War I, and his influence on national politics spanned several decades.

William Morris (Billy) Hughes (1862-1952), prime minister, was born on 25 September 1862 at Pimlico, London, son of William Hughes, a carpenter from North Wales employed at the Houses of Parliament, and his wife Jane, née Morris. His father was Welsh speaking, a deacon of the Particular Baptist Church and a conservative in politics.
Billy Hughes was Australia’s prime minister for most of the First World War. He steered the nation through the horrors of the war and the peace settlement debates. Prime Minister from 1915 to 1923, he was a member of the House of Representatives from federation in 1901 until his death in 1952.
