Figlio di Chellino (o Golino, o Ghelino: forme varie per Michele) Bonaiuti, di Certaldo, non se ne conosce l'anno della nascita. Sappiamo che svolse l'attività di cambiatore in Firenze, associato al fratello Vanni: e la presenza di quest'ultimo nella città, dove abitava nel popolo di S. Frediano, è documentata per il 1297.
