General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith. The Special Air Service ( SAS) is a special forces unit of the British Army. It was founded as a regiment in 1941 by David Stirling, and in 1950 it was reconstituted as a corps. [5] The unit specialises in a number of roles including counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, direct action and special reconnaissance.
The Army is also supported by 3,000 civilian employees from the public service. Formed in 1855, as the Active Militia, in response to the threat of the United States to the Province of Canada after the British garrison left for the Crimean War. This Militia was later subdivided into the Permanent Active Militia and the Non-Permanent Active Militia.
